Why This Must Be Read:
Okay, so I'm cheating and reccing the same author in the same month, but A) at least it's in different categories and B) it's really worth it, because this is one of my absolute favorite Daniel fics, missing scene fics, Stargate fics of all!
Redbyrd is great at not only filling in missing scenes of Stargate episodes from outsider perspectives, she does it in a way that never loses focus of the core SG-1 players (because let's face it, that's who we're really wanting to see in fic). And she does it keeping the personalities totally in sync.
Tons of fics have been written about "Scorched Earth" and it's moral dilemmas, including lots of angst between Jack and Daniel, Daniel and Sam, Jack and Sam. Friendly Fire takes an interesting twist. Daniel's zealous argumentative nature and steely determination is alive and well in this fic, and he's doing it defending Jack's decision.
Daniel's absent minded professor manner is observed in the SGC commissary. However, it quickly becomes apparent that he's not as oblivious to his surroundings as it seems when he decides to spin the SGC gossip wheel in a new direction, taking care to use his lecture hall experience to make certain his voice and message come through loud and clear. The added factor is he unknowingly has Jack as part of his audience.
Interwoven in a matter of fact manner is Daniel's own friendly fire incident from "Small Victories". Told from the point of view of an SG-5 member (the ill-fated Barber of "the Light"), it gives the outsider's/rumor mongering visions of SG-1 members, including Sam, while staying true to the characters themselves.
The scene is wonderful ending on the Jack and Daniel friendship, warm and fuzzy without being too sappy.
