Why This Must Be Read:
I found this late last night, and I'm glad I stuck it through to the end. The first part of the story almost seems like a team-fic, with all of them at Janet's while Cassie's birthday party goes on. However, Sam seems oblivious to Daniel and he's getting kind of annoyed over it. It has some wonderful snarky dialogue between the team during the first part. The second part is just Sam and Daniel, that night, when they decide that they do want to try this relationship out. It's got a nice blend between the romance, slight angst, and the humor. This is a really good fic, and I'm glad I found it.

In the kitchen, Daniel took stock of his reinforcements.

Jack nursed his beer, leaning against the sink with his usual irritated at life expression. He had on a cap that emphatically stated ‘shit happens’. Teal’c was seated calmly enough at the kitchen table, silently studying the spectacle in the living room, probably mentally jotting down notes on the Tau’ri species. On his head, he wore one of the many cowboy hats he owned. Daniel had begun to suspect Teal’c had a fetish for them. Sam sat on the counter between the kitchen sink and the owl-shaped cookie jar. Her heel idly knocked against the cabinet to the beat of the music like she wanted to dance a little herself but had too much self control.

Man, they were a sad bunch of recruits. Janet had wanted them there to help control the crowd and simply to make it a little fun for her too, but they’d pretty much declared defeat by leaving the kids to their own devices in the living room. Daniel grabbed one of the chairs, pulled it out from the table, and took a heavy seat.

“These kids make me feel old,” Daniel stated, groaning a little in dismay. “I caught myself thinking, ‘Back in my day, we had real music.’ Until now, I didn’t realize I had a ‘day’.”

Sam lifted her head and looked at him in response, a wry expression of agreement on her face. Maybe that was why she’d wanted to dress up, Daniel realized. To combat the age she knew she’d be feeling. She didn’t have anything to worry about, he admitted to himself. Not from where he was sitting.

Afraid that a little of that might show on his face, he hastily looked down into his punch. His reflection was thrown back at him in the red liquid and there was something in his eyes that he didn’t like seeing. When he shifted the cup in his grip, the liquid lapped against the edges and his reflection was lost.

Jack grunted loudly, a half-laugh, catching Daniel’s attention. “You? Danny-boy, I feel about a hundred years old right now.”

Daniel smiled at him, conceding his point. Jack was a good decade older than them. Although the day Jack actually looked like anything other than a teenager wearing grown up clothes was the day Daniel would walk naked through the SGC. There was just something in the way the man held himself that was so liquid he could blend in with his surroundings. It was reminiscent of rebellious 16-year-olds and the man always standing in the corner at bars, watching everyone with his hawk-like gaze.

Thinking about this, Daniel was distracted and looked toward Sam. He didn’t mean to. His eyes just seemed to gravitate to her now. He had to consciously control the compulsion to stare at her when his eyes weren’t otherwise occupied.

Sam returned his gaze for a second, eyes oddly bright, and Daniel got that strange feeling in his stomach again. Like someone was punching to get out. Oh, he recognized it well enough, but he only remembered having it with her for about the first year he’d known her, and even then, it hadn’t been quite this strong. It was an awkward twist of admiration and lust. Now, years of knowing her were tangled up in that mold, adding layers that he didn’t even want to think about.

Sam looked away first, and Daniel swallowed deeply. This was getting out of control. Either he’d have to get over this soon or he was going to say the hell with it and hump her fucking leg until she noticed him.
