Why This Must Be Read:
This was one of the many excellent stories written for the
sg1teamficathon back in December. It's a long one, but well worth reading all four parts (the link above is to Part 1). Mia's prompt was for a team mission that goes south and does not have Sam as a background character, and she definitely accomplishes both.
The fic stays suspenseful as she starts right in the middle of the action, and jumps back into flashbacks of how SG-1 arrived on the planet. Usually, that kinda bugs me, but not here. Part of the interest is the mystery of who's the good guys and who's the bad guys amongst these natives, and what really happened. The writing style is taut and wonderfully descriptive.
The characterization is right on point: Mia balances soldier Sam, scientist Sam, and caring teammate, but leaves enough vulnerabilities and doubts that it isn't SuperSam.
Daniel is actually unconscious for a lot of the fic, but when he IS conscious, he is an instrumental part of the team, and NOT the swoony helpless "civilian".
Jack is very believable worrying about missing team members, using his military knowledge, and having his irreverent and skeptical attitude.
Poor Teal'c is the weakest area of the fic, but his presence is not forgotten, either as Jaffa or even one of the rare lighter moments of the fic when mentioning his latest tv rerun habit.
Make sure you schedule some time to enjoy this long, rich story. It's an exciting team adventure.

In any case, people should go read it! It's really, really good. :-) And glad you enjoyed it.
