Why This Must Be Read: Strangely, this classic of slash has not yet been recommended. It’s my lucky day because this is a quintessential Must Be Read, one of the primary texts of Stargate Slash 101.
SG-1 encounters an archaeologist from Daniel’s past, Dr. Farness, who had been presumed dead after an accident, on a frozen planet protected by the Asgard. Apparently Loki isn’t the only one of our little gray allies who has been abducting people from Earth, although Dr. Farness’s presence has a purpose.
Quercus populates a frozen planet with a rich and fully developed society based on Viking culture. It’s more than a show of good research skills, though, because the characters created to live within the society are fully fleshed out and engaging. The evolution of Jack and Daniel’s relationship is central but it doesn’t dictate the story’s structure; that is, the piece isn’t over as soon as they have sex. A strong dose of realism of what it means to be gay in the military colors the story. The men do not blithely hop in the sack, unmindful of the difficulty of a gay relationship within the U.S. military. An excellent use of canon and an all around satisfying story.
Author’s Summary: SG-1 meets an old friend of Daniel's.
