Author's Summary:
Gravity nearly takes Jack O’Neill - first the kind that breaks bones, and then the kind that’s been pulling at him for years.
In the space between impact and anesthesia, with everything hanging in the balance, the realization hits: this could be it. No more chances. No happily ever after with Sam. And with that thought comes the gravity of a choice he can’t put off any longer.
Why This Must Be Read:
A lovely fic - written for Jack/Sam Day 2026 - where Jack gets seriously hurt off world and Jack comes to the realization that he's almost left his chance to be with Sam too late.
There's some serious pining and unsaid feelings but they head towards a happy ending.
The doors to the infirmary slammed open hard enough to echo.
“Where is he?” Sam’s voice cut through the sterile air - tight, breathless, already breaking at the edges despite the steel she tried to lace through it. Conversations faltered. A nurse froze with a chart in her hands. Heads turned as the tension swept through the infirmary like a storm front.
Janet Fraiser turned from the main desk, her expression immediately sharpening. She’d seen this version of Samantha Carter before. Rare. Not controlled at all - just barely held together, like one word might be enough to break her.
“Sam…”
“Where is he?” Sam repeated, louder this time, her eyes already scanning past Janet, searching, calculating, as if she could locate him by instinct alone. “I was told he was brought in from PX-7474 on a medevac litter - what happened? How bad is it?”
Janet closed the distance between them, her palm finding Sam’s shoulder and pressing
just enough to make her feel it. “He’s here,” she said calmly. “He’s alive.”
Sam’s breath hitched. Not relief - yet. Not until she knew everything. “What does ‘alive’ mean, Janet?”
That was the question beneath all of it.
Janet exhaled softly, then shifted into doctor mode. "He fell from a cliff," she said. "Approximately ten feet - give or take. Daniel estimates he lost footing on unstable rock near a ridge. A few feet further and he'd have gone down the whole slope - two hundred feet, easy."
Sam's face drained of color. "Oh God…"
"Teal'c managed to climb down and stabilized him until they could call it in. They're both in debrief with General Hammond now."
