Author's Summary:
Tag for The Gamekeeper. After reliving his parents’ deaths, Daniel needs some time alone to process the experience. He could also use a friend who understands what he’s going through.
Why This Must Be Read:
This is a lovely Jack O'Neill who knows when to give Daniel some space but also makes sure Daniel doesn't get too lost in his own head.
This is it. They’ve finally gotten free of the Gamekeeper’s artificial virtual world. Jack laughs and jokes with his team, grinning from ear to ear while he walks away, leaving the inhabitants of P7J-988 to pick flowers on their completely non-hazardous world and outrage the man who imprisoned them in their own minds.
Jack jokes some more while Doctor Fraiser conducts his exam, but the jokes aren’t quite so funny. He can’t stop thinking about the botched black ops mission he was forced to watch over and over. Daniel is quiet and subdued, lost in thought, and Jack figures he’s thinking about his experience, too.
“Shall we grab a bite to eat?” Jack suggests, leaping from the exam table, determined to put the experience behind him and to remember that no matter how much he’d like to, he can’t change the past, but he can learn from it to affect his future. “Dunno about you, but I don’t think that virtual reality machine fed me enough. I could go for some pie.”
“Me too,” says Carter with a smile like a lightbulb turning on in a dark room.
Teal’c tilts his head in agreement, the sparkle of his dark eyes and the slight upturn of his lips betraying amusement. “Indeed.” Jack knows Teal’c could put away a whole cupboard of pies.
It’s Daniel’s turn to answer. “Y’know, I’m not really that hungry. I’m gonna go get some work done.”
Jack’s been around the archeologist long enough to know that this is Daniel-speak for, ‘I need some time alone to process this’. He understands. Daniel’s just seen his parents being crushed to death on a loop, for cryin’ out loud. Jack wants to comfort him, to offer a supportive embrace to a friend who’s hurting, but all he says is, “Alright, don’t work too long.”
