Author's Summary:
Daniel brings Jack with him to a cultural theater event at his old university attended by some of his former colleagues. When one of Daniel’s professors assumes that he and Jack are an item, Jack plays into it to amuse himself and to get under Daniel’s skin. Which he does, in more ways than one.
Why This Must Be Read:
A fun fic where Jack goes to the theater with Daniel. Poor Daniel is confused and slightly embarrassed by Jack's actions... until the discussion after, where they both admit they've kissed other boys in the past.
It's sweet and them.
They arrived twenty minutes before the show began. A bit nervous about running into any of his former colleagues, Daniel was a little extra fidgety but tried not to show it. It didn’t help that somehow he’d wound up with Jack accompanying him tonight. When he, Sam, and Jack had ended up with an overnight layover in Chicago on the way back from a frustrating visit to D.C., with their flight out not scheduled until tomorrow afternoon, Daniel had suggested they all go to see one of his alma mater’s renowned theatre performances–he’d always enjoyed their productions back when he was a student–tonight’s was a multicultural celebration of dance and traditional music. He didn’t think it would really be either Sam or Jack’s thing, and had really only invited them to be polite. Sam had declined; she was wiped from the whole D.C. fiasco and said she was going to bed early. But Jack had surprisingly taken him up on his offer.
So, Daniel really hoped that he didn’t run into anyone he knew, although knowing the UChicago art crowd as he did, it was pretty much always the same faces. He wasn’t quite sure how to explain why he was hanging out with a U.S. Air Force Colonel. He’d concocted a vague story in his head about being contracted to do some translation work for the military, so that was how they knew each other. How the hell they’d managed to become friends was hopefully a follow-up question no one thought to ask.
The sounds of instruments being tuned floated into the lobby, intermingling with the chatter and laughter from people conversing, the clinking of glasses, the sound of doors opening and closing. It was hard to filter through the din, until Jack nudged him with his elbow, drawing his focus.
“So, what are we talking here? Like, interpretive dancing while people moan and wail?”
Daniel closed his eyes for a brief moment. This is what he’d been afraid of. He didn’t qualify Jack’s question with an answer, just gave him a squinty-eyed Look.
Jack responded with a smirk. “I’m gonna go grab a drink. Want anything?”
“Yeah, I’ll take a scotch on the rocks.”
“You’ll be drunk by intermission,” Jack said, patting Daniel on the back and heading off to the bar.
