Author’s summary: Hope is a dangerous thing. Or maybe it’s the thing with feathers; John’s never been quite sure.
Why This Must Be Read: A_Storm_of_Roses has written so many wonderful fics, but this one holds a special place in my heart. It revolves around the consequences of Rodney unexpectedly becoming a father—torpedoing his relationship with John and throwing him into an unexpected life on earth. It's written in sections from their different povs and it's incredibly thoughtful and sensitive. The story offers so many loving insights, making us feel deeply for everyone involved. A beautiful journey unfolds around and with them, allowing each character the space and growth they need. Contrary to everyone's first impression that nothing good could come of it, A_Storm_of_Roses masterfully brings them closer together, turning an unexpected situation into something not only possible but entirely believable and satisfying, ultimately giving them the happiness and love they deserve! Give it a try—it's a heartfelt story that will leave you with a smile on your face and warmth in your heart.
The delivery driver has graduated to knocking now, and Rodney practically rips the door open to tell him exactly what he thinks of people who don’t read the delivery instructions.
“What exactly is so urgent about delivering a month’s supply of cloth diapers?” Rodney shouts.
Only it isn’t the delivery driver at the door. Rodney freezes, hand clenched tight around the doorknob.
On his porch, John Sheppard smirks.
“I wouldn’t know. Some sort of blowout emergency?” John says.
“You’re not the diaper guy,” Rodney says.
He thinks he can be forgiven for such a stunningly obvious comment, because John Sheppard, who by all rights should be in a whole other galaxy right now, is standing on his Colorado porch, looking far too good in his fitted jeans, and a wrinkled white button-down.
“Not the diaper guy,” John nods, and it seems his brain is stuck on the obvious too.
It isn’t that Rodney’s lost for words, he never really is, it’s just that his mind is whirring through the myriad reasons that John might be standing on his porch, chief of them being that Atlantis is in trouble and his presence is required back in Pegasus.
Immediately.
Which would be a real pain, because Jennifer should have left for her Mommy and Me baby group 10 minutes ago, and someone needs to let the cleaner in.
“Found it!” Jennifer exclaims from upstairs. He can hear her coming, and he fights back the absurd urge to slam the door in John’s face.
“It was in my other purse,” she continues, hauling up the diaper bag with one arm, Maggie balanced in the other. “Ooh is that the diaper delivery?”
Jennifer stops in her tracks when she sees John.
“Colonel Sheppard,” she says. She sounds both surprised and a little wary.
“Dr. Keller,” John nods in greeting. He’s giving her a funny look, focussed and assessing, almost like a mission. Only he’s not actually looking at her face, but her arms.
He’s looking at Maggie, Rodney realizes.
Jennifer must catch on too, because she tilts her arms, giving John a better view of their daughter, who is blinking sleepily, dressed in a little polar bear onesie that had once belonged to Madison.
“And this is Maggie,” Jennifer says.
“Hey there, little girl,” John says, giving her an endearing little wave that really should look stupid coming from a grown man.
There’s a moment of awkward silence, Jennifer and Rodney watching John, John watching the baby, before Jennifer finally interrupts.
“Is there some sort of emergency?” she asks.
