Why This Must Be Read: a couple of weeks ago Domarzione posted to AO3 a number of fics from LJ that hadn't made it to AO3 previously, plus a few with additional sections added. There's some great reading there! I'm doing AUs this month and this one fit that category.
Sumnerverse is an interesting series of vignettes in which Sumner isn't killed in the Pilot and continues as Sheppard's CO. They're short stories and act as tastes of alternate ways it could have gone. Sheppard is of necessity far more aligned with Sumner, being his XO. Due to the changes and the different decisions Sumner makes, some things from canon go better, whereas other outcomes are less positive. Intriguing!
"We gotta go, sir," Sheppard said urgently, a hand extended out to help him rise. He took it, letting Sheppard pull him up. If the other man saw the surprise on his face, he didn't indicate it. "Ford's got the others free and on their way back to the ship, but this place is about to be swarming with Wraith. Can you walk?"
He felt weak and dizzy still, but nodded. "I'm good to go," he replied, taking a deep breath. "This your work?"
Sheppard smirked. "Yes, sir."
"Good shooting," he said, catching and keeping Sheppard's eyes. "Thank you."
The smirk faded for a moment, replaced by something raw and not meant to be witnessed, before returning. "You're welcome. And now we really need to get the hell out of here, sir."
They ran.
