Author’s summary: I had a LOT of feelings after watching the beauty and travesty that was “The Shrine” and this is the end result.

Why This Must Be Read:
This is the first SGA fic by starlightandpinot, written in December 2021, and it gives us an AU Mcshep version of the episode The Shrine, but with Carson instead of Jennifer. The powerful emotions between Rodney and John are so vivid and palpable, drawing you in completely. The story not only ties up the loose ends and fills the gaps in the episode but goes so much further, delivering a beautifully satisfying ending.
It's an incredible story—written with such emotional depth and sensitivity—and truly deserves every read and reread.

Rodney sits on the couch, watching as John turns down the sheets, then carefully fluffs up the pillows, of the only bed in the room.

“You don’t have to do this,” Rodney says, already feeling bad at having accepted the offer.

“I want to.”

“But I haven’t even been sleeping. You know I haven’t been sleeping. I just stay up all night, cracking my knuckles and wishing I didn’t have this… this thing running amok inside my brain.”

“I know, and I’m telling you: it’s fine. I’ll even stay up with you. We can play chess. Or Nintendo. You like Mario Party?”

“Yes, of course I like Mario Party,” he says, though he can hardly remember any details about the game, “but you don’t understand: even if I do manage to fall asleep, between the snoring and the mumbling and the—the constant waking up from nightmares, it can get pretty freakin’ loud in here.”

“Don’t care.”

“And without proper sleep, you might...”

He has trouble remembering the word, something like... like not doing a very good job. He lets out a sigh. This whole not remembering stuff is getting really annoying.

“You could start messing up on missions,” he settles on, instead. “You might not be paying attention because you were up all night listening to me and accidentally get yourself shot.”

“I’ll risk it,” John says, giving the pillow one last fluff before gesturing to the bed with a smirk. “All yours.”

Rodney stands up with a groan. “Fine.” He reluctantly flops into the bed, then lifts a pointed finger. “But don’t say I didn’t warn you when you wake up tired and forget to load your gun and end up getting the life sucked out of you by a Wraith.”

“Consider me sufficiently warned.”
