Author’s summary: Atlantis was incredible; it was science fiction writ large; it was a dream; it was a nightmare.

Rodney had far too much to do and far too many dangers to navigate and far too many people to worry the hell about, to waste much time mooning over Major John ‘Pain In My Damn Fine Ass’ Sheppard, who came to his bed some nights, or dragged Rodney to his, but who never accepted an outright invitation, never talked about it, never acknowledged that they were more than friends; who had a strict ‘five minute afterglow and run’ schedule, at least as accurate as Rodney’s watch.

Why This Must Be Read: You have to read this sensitive, insightful, and believable fic, which felt for me not just canon-compliant but utterly, unquestionably spot on.
Reading about all those quiet yet intense moments in Rodney's life, all the love and hope, and loss and heartbreaks, all the inner turmoil and resignation, all the break-ups and make-ups, and finally the epiphany and eternal, unconditional love filled my heart and touched me deeply, and gave me so, so much joy, and will give you joy too.
In the end, it shows you that Rodney understands what he truly wants from a relationship, what he is willing to give, and what he needs in return.
Go, and accompany him on this emotionally demanding but ultimately fulfilling path. It is without question worth the read!

“Well, what do you want from me, Rodney? I can’t exactly hold your hand in public and bring you flowers.”

“Oh yes, because that’s what a relationship is all about.”

Rodney tried his hardest not to snap, not to muddy his point, not to show, all too clearly, that he was almost as lost in the world of how this sort of thing really worked - what a relationship actually was all about - as Sheppard.

“All I want is … okay, so here’s the thing. I love you. It’s stupid and it’s unexpected and I don’t do that very often, but there it is. I fell in love with you. And if, if you … you have feelings for me too, then we can work this out, we can … I don’t know, we can at least have that understanding there? That we mean something. But, if you don’t, if you just like the sex … and it’s good sex, seriously hot, I get it … but. I need something more than that. If you don’t have that for me, then … that’s understandable. I won’t push. But I’ll consider us both free to look elsewhere.”

John overflowed again, for just one second, with too much feeling to get a read on; and then he wiped everything off, leaving only that cold blankness behind.

“You’ve always been free, Rodney.”

Which hit like a punch in the guts; but this was what he had asked for, what he’d known, really, would happen, if he broke that unspoken rule between them that they didn’t talk about this, ever.
