Why This Must Be Read: Author Summary: Daniel is a fool for love, and takes a serious risk to show it.
Knowing he is an unusual, not exactly traditional husband, Daniel sets out to do something special for his wife -- even though it's an extremely dangerous thing to do. The story begins with grave risk to life and limb, then veers into dangerous territory of another kind, and ends with ... well, I don't know about anyone else, but imo sometimes I like to close out the end of a trying or busy day with something both stimulating and reinforcing, and altogether satisfying; imo, this story is just that.
He checked the small bag tied around his waist, and reached for the other bag beside him. It stank, and that, he hoped, was a very good thing. It was no small matter to sacrifice a whole chicken towards any endeavour - like most desert peoples, the Abydonians were frugal to a fault - but Daniel hoped this bundle of feathers and blood and bone would preserve his own hide. A reasonable trade-off, he presumed, though he knew there were days when his friends and neighbors looked at him in wonder at his ineptitude. On those days, the chicken may have seemed a better bargain.
