Why This Must Be Read: Author's summary: Daniel got a lot of phone calls over the years. Here's five he didn't.

This is just brilliant. Each of the five ficlets (the phone calls that never happened ... at least, not in this reality), is an evocative story of possibilities, of events which could have been. And even more brilliant are phone calls of a different kind interwoven between the stories, creating an intersection where what could have been, but never was, is held up against what actually *was* but never realised.


"You recognize my voice?"

"Well, yes, but…"

"I don't have time to go over the autobiography, but I promise you'll find it very familiar." Daniel recognized the exasperation his own voice reached whenever Jack was being a little too dense. "Don't go to Egypt."
