Why This Must Be Read: I *love* anr's sparse, immersive, almost surrealistic writing style - there's so much emotion and meaning in between the lines, and this story is a particular favorite. I also love fics that deal with John and Elizabeth post-Atlantis, and in this one she returns on his doorstep after being MIA for years on Asuras. There's a real tangible tension that runs through this story, you can truly feel John's pain and suspicion and longing as he wants so badly for her to be real, but struggles to let himself believe. As well as the hurt she feels as he struggles to let her in. There's an air of hope in the end though, and all wrapped up in some beautiful SoCal coastal imagery (a personal headcanon of mine is of them eventually ending up there so this is yet another thing I love about this story!)
He heads down to the beach, to the water, grateful to find himself alone on the stretch. Behind him, he knows she's watching him, can feel her gaze on the back of his neck, but he doesn't turn around. He can't. Not when there's no point, when there's nothing to see.
Because she's not real.
She can't be real.
She can't.
Stripping off his shirt, he wades into the ocean.
