August reccers volunteer post

Comment with the username you'll be using to rec and the category you want. Choose a category from the list below or select a more rare category that has been used in the past. If you want to rec a category that is not on the list below or in Memories, that's fine, too: you may volunteer for a category that isn't listed.

By signing up, you are committing yourself to reccing at least two (preferably four) stories in that category during the month of August. July reccers should make sure to rec their minimum two before signing up for next month. You don't have to check the Memories before choosing which stories to rec. If you have a good fic to rec, go for it! Do remember, though, that story links must be freely accessible, without requiring any sort of login to view. Reccers may add self-recs once they have done their minimum two for their category of the month, and see more details at the FAQ entry.

First-time volunteer wading in: preferred category will be Crossovers, fallback category is Humor.

Having read over the FAQ post before signing up, one thought: the present rules specify - not unreasonably - that links to recced works must not require a login. In light of developments in recent months regarding mass scraping and illicit reposting of works from AO3, some authors - also not unreasonably, IMO - have chosen to make their works accessible only to logged-in users. There may well not be a good solution for this, but I'd suggest that circumstances being what they are, it might be appropriate to do some further thinking about that particular rule and how best to deal with such complications as it may create going forward.

I agree, I think this rule needs a rethink. People reasonably don't want their stories scraped for AI training or for "AO3 apps" which are making a profit off a nonprofit entity.

I don't think I realized that and I recced a login-required fic. (Er, whoops.) However, I have plenty of invite codes due to a couple of exchanges I've run, and I offered an invite code in order to allow anyone who doesn't have one to be able to read the fic.

You did rec a login-required fic, and you did offer codes, and we decided not to make a fuss about it. :) We'd appreciate it if you avoided it in the future, though.

Stories getting scraped or swiped is sadly not a new thing. This has been something going on for years. As of now, the mods will maintain a policy of open URLs without demanding logins. But thanks for giving us your opinion, and for continuing to rec.

I had found an archive.org link and debated with the ethics of offering that as a link, given that the author has obviously wanted public links taken down. It was on Wraithbait, but that's no longer an option either, sadly! (So many archives lost.)

But yes, now that I know that's not allowed, I won't do it again.

Thanks for your thoughts. The locking of accounts on AO3 is, I agree, not uncommon, and the problem of scraped fics isn't a new one - I know many authors who have locked down their fics because of increased scraping from years ago.

Because it's not a new problem, there really isn't a reason to change the comm policy. Yes, there are authors out there that I wish would unlock their fics. Yes, it's relatively easy to get an account at AO3 these days. I will discuss it with the other mods, but at this time, we'll continue to ask for an open URL. Many authors post first to DW or other sites, even if they subsequently archive on AO3, and that can often serve as an alternative link.
