Author's Summary: McKay, Lorne, and three teams of Marines head out on a research mission to a planet on the edge of the galaxy, and disappear without a trace. Eight months later Lorne returns with two injured team members, a counterfeit McKay, and no explanations. What the hell happened eight months ago, and where's McKay?
Author's note: This is NOT woobie!slavefic. Nor is it woobie!whump or other woobie. It is an action, war, battle, overcoming odds, Sci Fi story. The title, while relevant (I promise!) is NOT a nod to any form of emo angst through emotional abuse. (Apparently it's a trope! Who knew? Author's note courtesy of comments from brave readers!)
Why this must be read: This is the first story that jumps to mind when I think of a great Lorne story. (As it turns out when you peel back the layers, it's also a great Rodney McKay story from Lorne's pov.)
It's all of the things in the above Author's Note and a gripping read. Not for those seeking fuff, but if you want a sci-fi story you can sink your teeth into do check it out.
Snippet of fic: It is surprisingly difficult to pick out just one snippet, but I will give you this.
John burst into the gate room at a full run, skidding to a halt just inside the doors and barely before he would have bowled over one of his Marines. They were positioned in a semi-circle around the gate, spread out just enough to ensure full coverage of the wormhole while avoiding the potential for a friendly crossfire that could take them all out. A small part of his mind approved; the greater part by far was holding his breath waiting for Lorne and his team to step through the gate.
Eight months late for check-in.
