Why This Must Be Read: Author's summary: "It was a much needed vacation, so of course something had to go horribly wrong. On the run, all alone, and more than slightly freezing, Daniel tries to find a beacon of hope. He finds pie. Family too, but mostly pie."
The reasons to read this are already pretty well explained in the author summary ... there's danger, a resourceful and resilient Daniel, plus an affirming theme of team equals family threaded throughout. And while those are plenty enough reasons, there's also spot-on (imo) characterisation, some truly engaging wit (I love the bits of sardonic humour!), and, for those of us unfamiliar with the state, a beautifully descriptive look at a wee slice of Minnesota.
He loved history and he loved the change of technology through the years, even something as recent as a century ago. There had been no radar, no fancy GPS, only a light set far up in the cliffs to stop ships from hitting said cliffs and, surprisingly enough, the method occasionally failed. He doubted they would be able to see anything in the choppy gray waters, but Cassie was actually showing an interest in something and it wouldn't hurt to follow a slightly unkempt path to indulge it, or so he thought.
He had snapped a few pictures along the way, sneaking in a few of her so that Janet would have some for her scrapbook. It was under the guise of doing this that he had noticed the three men in black baseball caps following damn near every move since Jack had split off.
