Why This Must Be Read: Author's summary: It's already too late for SG-8 when this story opens…but what about SG-1?
Daniel is captured, and although he's alone, he strongly suspects the rest of SG-1 might also be in trouble. This is captivity with a chilling twist, though; one he will need to think his way through in order to escape and find his team. While the author doesn't categorise her stories, for me this one sits just to one side of centre in the 'horror' square. This is not because there's anything explicit in here (in fact, just the opposite: it's all quite brilliantly understated), but because of dissonance. The sheer incongruity in the juxtaposition of child's-play with that of threats of violence is, well ... perhaps the author's note on the story says it best: "Sometimes ...things are better left to one's imagination..."
The eerily sweet voice droned on, and she danced happily, collecting the shadows from her dirt floor as best she could, polishing them.
Daniel watched in tight apprehension, as the shadows that only she could see slipped from her hand and her eyes grew cloudy and cold.
"You!! You have to stop stealing my belongings!" she hissed angrily, stepping closer, within a few inches now. "Give them back!"
Daniel forcibly steadied his breath, he had no idea what she would do this time, he never did.
