Why This Must Be Read: In this action drama, Jack is called upon to investigate and resolve a situation brought about by NID negligence. Because of the way the story timeline is written, I can't actually tell you anything more specific than that without revealing spoilers, except to say that due to its being written in an intimate Jack first person pov, you are right there in his head the whole way through. This amazing story brings into stark focus the demands and realities of Jack's responsibilities, and through his perspective - his eyes, his heart, his mind - we learn of the darker side of his role, and see first-hand his intelligence, wit, and resilience. And all the way through, we also experience his dedication to protecting his team from the impact of those less savoury acts he's called upon to carry out. It can be somewhat dark in a few spots, but honestly, I cannot say enough about just how good I feel this story is.
The headache had slackened but was still lingering, sort of like a hangover without all the fun of getting there. I needed a pee, a toothbrush, a shower, and a shave . . . in that order. Then breakfast.
That decision made, I continued to lay there feeling old and tired in a way that had nothing to do with being drugged or having a headache or sleeping wrong. It didn’t even have anything to do with age. It was mostly about finding out someone you thought you knew was someone you didn’t want to know, doing something you didn’t want to think about.
"Shit."
That being said, I forced myself up and into the bathroom. It was 0400 and my day had only just begun.
