Author's Summary:
The repeal of the US military’s “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy changes John Sheppard’s life in more ways than one.
Why This Must Be Read:
It's easy to forget that the infamous DADT rule was in effect from February 1994 to September 2011. SG1 and SGA sat firmly during that time and was almost another character in a lot of fan fiction written at the time.
The story is told from Sheppard's POV and it's really about Jack and Daniel, as they finally get what they want. Although John finally catches a clue.
In a move that John thinks is something no one else has the power and the balls to ever dare do, Jack O’Neill hands in his retirement papers the same day the president signs the DADT repeal on national television.
Word travels fast in a base as close-knit as theirs. By the time second shift starts, scuttlebutt has reached the mess hall, where John is finishing an early dinner.
He listens to Walter’s flustered and unsolicited reassurance that of course he knew about it, holds Siler’s loaded gaze with a sharp nod, and even joins in on the efforts to comfort a dispirited Captain Grogan. They make small talk for half an hour before Siler stands up, offers to bus John’s tray, and drags his two companions away with an apologetic smile.
