Why This Must Be Read: This is one of the most emotionally realistic, powerful 'Heroes' episode tags I have encountered. A look at how Janet Fraiser's death could have impacted the relationship between Sam and Daniel, the stark grief, guilt, and anger in this short story make it a difficult read at times. As deeply heartbreaking as some of it is, though, the glimmer of light at the end - the depth of connection between Sam, Daniel, and Jack that even tragedy, grief, and guilt cannot defeat - makes this story an ultimately satisfying one.
Note: If anyone wishes to access any of the other stories at the above wayback link, please be aware that the url for some of them might need to be edited in order to get to the story page - you might need to delete the '/stories/' portion of the link.
“You weren’t ready. Wells was screaming and you got distracted. It happens all the time.” Sam swallows, scratching at a loose thread in the comforter. It takes her a long moment to get her voice back. “You were there to cover the medics.”
Daniel opens his mouth, then shuts it. “I know.”
“You were supposed to be covering them. That was all you had to do.”
His throat is tight. “I know.”
