Why This Must Be Read: This short story is an epilogue to Season 3's 'Crystal Skull'. In it, as seen through Sam's eyes, the author melds trust, friendship, and the role childhood experiences play in helping determine who we are as adults, into a poignant look at a man struggling to lay conflicted feelings to rest. It's all at once thoughtful, perceptive, and impossibly sad ... but the glimpse into Daniel's childhood plus the strong bond he shares with Sam make this a deeply rewarding story as well. Also rewarding is finding that galaxysoup (who wrote under a different pen name, way back when) is archived on AO3 - I've been re-reading all their stories on the wayback link to The Grove for the last many many years, so, wheee! on realising they are on AO3!
Sam turned another page, scanning the cramped writing with half her attention. Any other time she'd be milking this for all it was worth, asking detailed questions and getting Daniel to spill everything, but for now she had her sights set on trying to figure out what was going on in Daniel's head. It was a difficult enough task on a normal day.
