Why This Must Be Read: A new and invincible enemy, the Rephame, appear in the Milky Way and the galaxy falls, with the last survivors fleeing to Atlantis. John's forced to take charge and the expedition and refugees are on the run, forming a colony elsewhere in Pegasus. Excellent writing and gripping storytelling - an often heart-breaking journey for Rodney and John, but ultimately a happy ending. Written for McShep Match.
He stands up again, pushing Rodney back gently. “I’m not Elizabeth,” John says, only he’s Sheppard again, after all these years. “I’m not Carter. I’m not Woolsey. I am not even fucking Caldwell. And I cannot do this.”
“You mean you won’t,” Rodney says. “Brave enough when you have to blow yourself up and a fucking coward when you have to let people see you’re actually a real human boy!” He’s panting, he’s so damned angry, because the return of Sheppard, the loss of John is one of the hardest things, the one thing in all this that threatens to break him. It makes no sense, but that doesn’t stop it from being true.
John’s hands tighten into fists, but stay at his waist. “Is that all McKay? Don’t you have a water system to help Zelenka and the engineers set up?”
Rodney nods, turns, leaves the office, wishing he could slam the door instead of just letting it slide shut behind him.
