Why This Must Be Read: I find myself at a loss for words about this amazing fic. It's angsty, but not more than canon, given that it's an episode tag for "Double Jeopardy" from Season 4, which is about the fate of the robot versions of SG-1. It's beautifully plotted and professionally written. It's heartbreaking, first because of its portrait of a Jack who is professional and a servant of duty and his oaths until the end, even in a robot form. It's heartbreaking also if you are like me and think Jack/Daniel is at all plausible, because of its clear-eyed, detailed look at how that might have worked for the robots and yet not really worked for the "real" Jack and Daniel.
It's written, IMHO, quite in character from Daniel's point of view. It had a huge impact on me when I was inhaling all the fic I could find in this fandom around 2007. I don't have a date for its original publication, but it was well known and beloved by the time I came into this fandom around 2006. Fasten your seatbelts and read 12,000 words of thoughtful, beautifully turned story.
Sam met him outside the door, in the process of closing it behind herself as she exited.
"I figured out how to reactivate the replica of Colonel O'Neill. It turned out the explosive devices used the same elements as the core reactor, so I was able to scavenge from the Teal'c replica and O'Neill's explosive charge. I don't know how long it will last, though. I'm going back to my office to run some decay scenarios on the computer there."
"Then, he's awake? On? Uh..." Daniel flailed.
Sam nodded. "The last thing he remembered was talking to Colonel O'Neill as his power supply failed."
"So, he's not in a good mood?" Daniel raised his eyebrows.
She shook her head. Then shrugged. "He seems a little highly strung. I guess it's understandable."
