Why This Must Be Read: When I first started reading SGA fanfiction, I remember coming across "Counting in Days" as one of the first Sam/John stories I read. At the time, I was an avid Sam/Jack fan, and this story opened up a whole new world for me. It challenged the idea that Jack was the only possible pairing for Sam, as John and Sam's friendship and relationship was conveyed in such a sweet, tense and funny way that I was hooked from there on. Put simply, WritinginCT is able to give a mix of playfulness and complex depth to these characters that makes them believably human and their experiences thought-provoking. That is why it will always be one of my all-time favourites and why I'll recommend it to anyone who haven't read it yet.

P.S. It is a companion piece to WritinginCT's Daniel/Ronon fic "A Lament for the Living", but in my opinion it is not necessary to read that one beforehand to follow this story.


It had been eight days since the suicide watch had been imposed on one of her best friends. It had been fifteen days since the ship had arrived bearing the weary and broken remnants of the only survivors. It had been thirty-eight days since they received the news via a weak and garbled subspace communication. It had been thirty-seven days since she had slept for more than an hour or two at a time. It had been forty-five days since Earth was destroyed. She wondered if she would ever count time in anything but days again.
