Why This Must Be Read: This is really AR1 teamfic, told from Aiden's POV. The story echoes what happens in canon, so it's about a very important event in Aiden's life. It's an Earth-based AU in which they're all neighborhood kids - friends playing together across the summer. It's a lovely story, and their characters shine through despite how young they are. The ending's bitter-sweet, and perfect. Even though there's no more from this author that can be located, this fic's very much worth reading.
Rodney took charge of the snacks with a gleam in his eye. Hands free now, Aiden hopped the chain-link and followed Rodney to the old-fashioned board fence between his and John's houses. There was a gap nobody's parents seemed to care about, a gap that got wider every year, with the help of Teyla's Swiss Army knife and a large stick. They ducked through.
Speaking of Teyla, she was already in John's yard, swinging idly on the tire swing as John pushed her. Pushed lightly - not hard, not for real. It was too hot to go all out.
(Also, John's dad said if they broke this swing or each other, he wouldn't build them another, so they were very careful now. Mostly. Except when they forgot.)
She slowed to a stop and took the snickerdoodle Rodney passed to her with solemn thanks. When they were all appropriately smeared with chocolate, John brought out the Plan.
The Plan was not like last year's Plan, which had involved a war trench and an unexpected yellow jacket's nest. Nor was it like last year's Second Plan, which involved digging a pond by Sycamore Creek. (They had lost shoes to that Plan. Luckily, none of the shoes had been Aiden's.) Nor was it like the Third Plan, which had been a solemn vow to walk to the ice cream store together every day for the rest of the summer. (That Plan had worked. Mostly.)
No, this year's Plan looked like a jungle gym on fire. In one corner of the page he could just make out the smudged words "TREAE FORT".
Aiden liked this Plan already.
