Why This Must Be Read: A.W.O.L'S summary says: John went A.W.O.L. after a mission in Afghanistan. A few years later, a chance meeting with a certain Dr. Rodney McKay leads to nothing but trouble. And possibly redemption.

John Sheppard is a Sentinel in hiding without a guide, he is on the run and A.W.O.L and presumed dead after the mission went wrong in Afganistan. Being a Sentinel means he is a second class citizen and has certain regulations and rules to follow and so he hides his status. When he befriends and then saves Rodney McKay his life becomes more complicated as the SGC take him in and O'Neill takes him under his wing. However, when his former C.O. is hunting him down.

This is the first story of the Redemption series but can be read alone. The Series is described as "In a 'verse where sentinels and guides are known, sentinels are second-class citizens and DADT doesn't exist, astrophysicist Rodney McKay works at the SGC. Major John Sheppard, secretly a sentinel, is M.I.A., presumed K.I.A. in Afghanistan. Their paths cross in the unlikeliest of places: in a café in Colorado Springs, when agents of the Trust attempt to kidnap Dr. McKay. Life is about to get really complicated for both of them."

I have always had a soft spot for Sentinel/Guide fics and this is another favourite of mine. Unlike other Sentinel/Guide fic this one doesn'th ave that instant bond but a slow burning attraction and instant friendship between John and Rodney. It is also a fic where O'Neill is collecting Sentinels and their guides...AGAIN. (LMAO) I like that bit immensely as O'Neill does seem to collect people.

Why this must be read: I love a good first time story and this is a favorite. The thing that stood out for me in this great story by toomuchplor is how real it feels. I do enjoy reading stories where two people fall in love and into bed and it's all hot and perfect. This one has a little dose of reality mixed in. The characterzations are spot on as always with this brilliant writer, and I love how their relationship grow and evolve throughout the story.
