Why This Must Be Read: This is one of the very best road trip fics I’ve read. Set in the 1920s, it’s a great look at a developing friendship (and more) between Daniel and Jack. More importantly, the road trip provides an excellent backdrop for Daniel’s personal growth both as a young man discovering the world outside academia for the first time, and as he struggles to accept himself and his feelings in view of the prevailing attitudes of the day.
Sid did a phenomenal amount of research on 1920s America and it shows through every piece of the story. She weaves it all in so naturally, through dialogue and thought, that it almost seems like Jack and Daniel have always existed there!
This story is fun and funny and poignant and angsty and will make you think. Bonus: it will definitely leave you with a smile on your face.
