Why this must be read:
For my opening rec into the angst category, I put forward a selection that touches an aspect of SGC life that has kept me thinking months after first reading this. The anonymity that the SGC functions under sadly prevents the memorializing of its fallen members in ways like a wall of the fallen. Yet Hammond has a way in which he remembers his fallen and MIA members. With miniature Stargates with black (for dead) and white (MIA) centers, Hammond remembers the men and women who have fallen under his command. The fic itself touches the moment in Season 3 when Thor’s ship has crashed into the Pacific, and it’s not known whether Jack, Sam, and Teal’c have survived.
Denise has written a very touching and thoughtful look at what a commanding officer goes through when his subordinates die or disappear under him. I’ve often wondered what Hammond thinks as he sends his men and women through the Gate, never knowing whether they’ll come home or not. Denise provides a very moving answer to that question.
Story Summary: The CIA has a memorial wall...does the SGC?
