Why This Must Be Read:

Knowing Rodney's canon discomfort around children, the idea of him as the storyteller to the expedition's children is particularly amusing. Sheppard's not-as-covert-as-he-thought eavesdropping reveals exactly why the notoriously irritable scientist is so adored by his audience in this AU from season one.

Why This Must Be Read: This is really fun, romance, and a little angst. Sam is being courted by two (three, I guess - since Lantash counts as well) guys, and she is having a hard time choosing. This leads to many strange and often funny situations - and ending in a more direct confrontation between the adversaries. All ends well, though.

Why This Must Be Read: I'll start my reccing off with two alternate universe fics--because I just can't resist a good AU!

The prompt for this fic was Harlequin, and Princess delivers! In her answer to a long-standing joke about AUs, Princess offers Daniel as a wealthy academic and Jack as his poolboy ... to start with. Beyond smutty wet Speedo images and the conflict of class structure, though, Princess builds in deeper Harlequin plotty devices--though if I told you I'd have to kill you I'd spoil it. Suffice it to say, she packs a heck of a lot of story into 5,600 words.

Throughout, Daniel is still our beloved academic who wanders off on verbal side paths, yet is tougher than he looks underneath; Jack is is genial sex bomb, with hidden intelligence and competence; their connection and telepathy sparks from the start; and snippets of characters and themes from canon make for fun, Stargate-y shout-outs.

In the interest of disclosure, I did get to beta this fic, which pretty much meant that I got to read this awesome story a few days before the rest of the world.

If you like any of the above, this fic is a must-read! In another AU for the jd_ficathon, Lokei has cast Daniel as a "fringe" marine archeologist, chasing ancient folktales across the Black Sea; Sam as the captain of the boat, able to get old friend Daniel his survey resources as cover for her secret military mission; and Jack as the Special Ops colonel they pull unconscious from the sea one day. Aside from managing a mini-UN of a crew, Daniel has to protect his academic reputation, unravel Jack's mystery, fend off aggressive Turkish officials, and hope that his growing attraction to Jack doesn't get him into trouble.

The characters, canon and original, are well drawn and engaging, and the plot keeps pulling the reader along. Lokei has written an appealing story that's smart and satisfying on multiple levels. Enjoy!

Why This Must Be Read: This story dates from the hiatus between seasons one and two, when Siege tags were springing up all over the place and being subsequently jossed by canon. It hasn't been badly jossed, though -- just a few minor details that might be slightly jarring from the vantage of knowing how the episode actually turns out.

And the story itself is wonderful -- Rodney's quest for the contents of Kavanagh's iPod leads him into the unfamiliar and (for him) uncomfortable realm of friendship, specifically involving one Major John Sheppard, USAF. John and Rodney's interactions are awkward and sweetly tentative as they grapple with their personal demons and find unexpected comfort in each others' company. Both John and Rodney's characterizations are sensitively drawn, and the story's language is beautifully descriptive in some places, hilarious in others, and melancholy just when it's needed. This is about recovery and healing and connection, and offers a glimpse of the solid foundations of a deep and lasting friendship.
