Why This Must Be Read: Atlantis and the Pegasus galaxy provides scientist with a wealth of research to discover. The city itself holds the history of the ancients in it's abundant technology and gleaming towers. It's easy for the scientist to get caught up in their own importance, after all, they're the reason there is an expedition at all. Protecting them are the military members of the expedition putting their lives on the line often without gleaning any respect from those they are there to keep safe. In this story an incident occurs that pushes Sheppard into calling the scientist on their egocentric behavior.

Why This Must Be Read: Captured by the Wrath, the team is forced to fight like Roman gladiators in a ring of death. I love the 'feel 'of this story, I could really picture the ring and the horror of our teams struggle to survive as well as their frustrations at not being able to keep each other safe. There is hurt all round in this well written story.

Why This Must Be Read: The first thing that attracted me to this story was the fact that it has both Jack O'Neill and John Sheppard in it, that combination never fails to draw me into a fic. The story flows nicely after the events of 'The Return Prt 2' and both men get to have a little chat about Sheps role in the good general's rescue before their talk is cut short when the jumper crashes and the duel whumpage begins. I love the dialogue in this story with both characters feeling very in character to me.

Why This Must Be Read: I considered for a long time whether I should rec this story under this catergory (or leave it to rec as an AU down the track), but I decided that this story shows so much of the John Sheppard I love that it fits here just as well. The story revolves around the fact that Sheppard is living offworld with Teyla and his son who is the product of a wraith experiment. This is not a John/Teyla pairing, it's friendship deep and true, with Teyla giving up much to stand by John when he needs her the most.

The story is AU but could very well have branched of pre-EATG cannon. It's a haunting tale that shows not only the shock and horror of wraith experimentation but also John's acceptance and blossoming love of a little boy that had no control over his introduction into John's life. Their relief at being rescued from the wraith quickly develops into desperation that forces John and his young son to flee Atlantis with the support of Teyla (and help from Rodney)

Johns courage and spirit leaps from the page as he struggles to protect his son. His need to do that comes at a terrible price that almost drives him over the edge. A surprising twist sees an old enemy become a close ally that provides the incentive for John to fight through the despair that almost overwhelms him after tragedy strikes.

When I first read this story I had a little trouble following what was happening at first, but quickly discovered the mystery in the first parts are slowly and carefully unveiled as the story goes on.

Be warned though, this reading left me sobbing in places as the emotion bleeds through. This is a Sheppard that has been torn apart emotionally yet still finds the strength to fight on. He's broken but has the courage to rise over it and do what he feels is right in his fight against the wraith for the people of Pegasus.
