Sorry for another late start, but I went on holiday and didn't have internet access when I thought I would :)

Why this must be read:

They are the flamekeepers, the ones whose candles burn at both ends, and the ones who pass on the duty.

This is definitely more of a friendship piece but it is a beautiful look at how Elizabeth manages to convince Rodney to never give up hope. Without being overly soppy Carin uses the imagery of a candle's flame to show that only one person needs to have hope for it to be effective. Rodney is written really well in this piece, with him taking on board what Elizabeth has told him, even if outwardly, he still appears the same

Why This Must Be Read:

Okay, here's the deal.  This rec is for posterity; you see, 10 days and counting from posting, del.icio.us has this fic bookmarked by 150 readers, and while that's but a drop in the proverbial ocean, this fic has to have been read by every sga fanster out there, and recc'd by every reccer.  So, like I said:  Posterity.  As soon as I'm done waxing here, I'm clicking on that website link and reading every single thing this author has written in the fandom.  Ahem:

An epic story with great legs and nearly every element of storytelling imaginable.  John and Rodney, fumbling in the literal and figurative dark.  Incredibly enjoyable read that had me at the opening line.  Hard to say much without spoiling, and while I'd loved to have read more about individual environments (and how huge would that fic be?), I'm wholly satisfied with John and Rodney's circumscribed world- utterly in keeping with the overall construct of the story.  Enjoyable as well as torturous.  My favorite kind.

Why This Must Be Read: Set on Earth some nebulous time post-Atlantis, this is a slapstick comedy featuring a cat person, a dog person, and their frustrated lovers trying to live together without committing homicide (or felinicide). It gets funnier with each installment, and there's always a heartwarming moment or two within the craziness. (Warning: Do not drink and read.)

Why This Must Be Read:

After two and half years, I'm still unpacking this story in my head, and finding new things in it every time I re-read.

It's by Martha, so of course it's a striking piece of fic and beautifully written. It's a riveting character study of a Jack who's tightly, bitterly enraged in the aftermath of what happened in 'Red Sky,' and whose foundation of faith in Daniel -- in what Daniel himself has faith in -- has been cracked down the center. It's got a rough-edged, explicit sexuality that you can appreciate for its sizzling hotness or as the physical medium for working through a profound perceived betrayal. And what it ultimately reveals underneath Jack's stony anger has resonance far beyond that time and place.

This isn't an easy story to read -- emotionally harsh, veering from bleak to brutal and back, and layered with psychological complexities -- but it adds tremendous dimension to the episode it tags, not to mention 'Maternal Instinct' and 'Meridian' and 'Origin' and a host of others, and it'll leave you thinking for a good long while.

About 4200 words, and written for the 2005 Jack/Daniel Ficathon, which produced a lot of terrific fics.
