This is Jack in the year between the movie and "Children of the Gods", coming back to the wreckage of his life to find that Abydos changed everything and nothing.
And Sara, who still loves him enough to try to help him, even as she's smart and strong enough to find the distance from him that she needs to survive, before he drags her down with him like a drowning swimmer.
This is an excellent character study, and a grown-up story in the best possible sense, mature and painful and rich.
