"For Great Justice!"

Continuing my rec love affair with unusual fics, my inner nerd had much glee when I came across this "Zero Wing" opening using SGA screencaps.

Why This Must Be Read: This fic is set early in SG-1's history, when Sam was still worried about proving herself worthy and Teal'c was still figuring out how things worked among the Tau'ri. It opens with the two of them stranded on a planet crawling with Jaffa; Teal'c is badly injured and in need of time for Kel’no’reem in order to heal. Since Jack and Daniel have gated back to Earth for reinforcements, Sam is the ranking team member, and she must battle not only the odds of their dire situation, but her teammate's inexperience with both female warriors and the principle of leaving no one behind as she struggles to keep them both safe until the cavalry shows up. Told from Teal'c's POV, this story offers a convincing look into the rogue Jaffa's early mindset, demonstrating not only the prejudices that have carried over from his former life, but also the sense of ultimate hopelessness he feels deep down; Sam's definite faith that O'Neill will return for them in time and her (less certain) faith that she can keep them alive long enough to be rescued cause Teal'c to doubt both her intelligence and her sanity.

It's both an exciting action story and an illuminating character study, as we first watch Teal'c reluctantly trusting Sam's judgment and later witness their harrowing attempt to escape from the clutches of the bad guys. All in all, a fun read with an ending neither too emotionally pat nor too mushy.

Why This Must Be Read: My first rec in this category, First Prime, was all about Daniel. Well, this one is all about Teal'c.

This fic is fully built in Teal'c's POV, and it is truly amazing in that. You really feel like Teal'c is telling you the story. The way he sees Daniel is very in-character considering this is set in the 3rd. season, and Daniel is still torn between being a civilian and a warrior. And, of course, the sex is smoking hot. Be sure to read the rest of the series, you can find the links in the author's website.

Why This Must Be Read:
This incredible series follows the evolution of Sam and Janet's relationship from the beginning of the show through the end of season one and includes episode tie-ins, as well as independent stories. Pink Rabbit sticks with canon and fills in the gaps between the episodes and introduces all new stories full of fantastic adventures. There is a little bit of everything in these stories--action, adventure, humor, UST, teamy goodness. Sam and Janet are expertly written and Pink Rabbit shows how their friendship, well-established in the beginning, begins to change and deepen, especially after the arrival of Cassie. All of the other characters are here and are also well-crafted and Sam and Daniel's friendship is especially wonderful. It amazes me how Pink Rabbit came up with all of the incredible stories that make up the series. They are all internally consistent, tie into canon effortlessly, and evidence great attention to detail and an active imagination. Aside from the fact that they focus so heavily on Sam and Janet--and on the expectation that something more will come--any of these could have easily been episodes. That's how good they are. In fact, they are even better than actual episodes because they focus so heavily on Sam and Janet and the expectation that something more will come. The descriptive language, the plot development, the great dialogue, all of these things and more make this series one of the best pieces of fic I have ever read.

This was rec'd in a different category in 2004 so I am guessing that it has not been updated since then. As such, it ends close to the close of season one even though the outline of the series has plot summaries through season two. I suppose I have given up waiting for those stories to materialize but this is still worth the read (and at 13 full length fics, it is quite a committment--but you will not be able to stop once you start) .
