Why This Must Be Read: My next set of Alternate Universe recs are all John/Rodney romantic comedies, because this fandom is so damn good at it.

Just imagine Rodney, his rental car broken down in the middle-of-nowhere Iowa. Where the realities of rural life mean that his very importantness can't be catered to. Quelle horreur! Imagine John as the unfortunate farmer whose property Rodney's car has broken down in front of. Will John's well-concealed amusement at Rodney's antics keep him from wanting to murder him? Will Rodney's intelligence let him catch on to the fact that there's more to John than simple-minded farmer? Okay, maybe you know the answers to those questions, but the wonderful characterizations, descriptions and real heart in this story are a treat. Plus there's tacky postcards, a particular love of mine.

Reading this story is like eating chocolate bon bons. Indulge in the yum! And when you want more, there's soundtracks, a ficlet, and continuing adventures tagged here.

Why This Must Be Read: It's difficult to talk about this fic without spoiling the wonderful intro. The story starts with a (non-explicit) liaison between John and Jeannie. It's years later when John tries to look her up that he meets her brother Rodney, and they discover that they have a common interest. Though John is still in the Air Force and Rodney is still a scientist at the SGC, their life circumstances are changed from canon. Rodney is still very Rodney, though, and loads of fun to watch even at this much different angle. They build their friendship over e-mail, and I won't say much more, other than that the story spans drama, bucketloads of cuteness, and love, without being sappy. Seriously -- loads of warm fuzzies.

Why This Must Be Read: This story was written for the reel_sga challenge, based on Cupid Takes a Holiday. Rodney's family history says he'll go insane if he's not married by age 35, so Jeannie, pressured by the rest of the family, insists he go to a matchmaker -- Zelenka and Sons, with the annoying surfer dude receptionist. But all the dates he gets set up with are a disaster. The premise is naturally crack-in-the-making, and the execution doesn't disappoint. The phone calls between Jeannie and Rodney and John and Rodney alone are howlingly funny.

Why This Must Be Read: Posted anonymously as part of the [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com] community, this fic shows how Teyla and Elizabeth have been growing closer in the wake of John's disappearance. It focuses on the choice that Teyla needs to make, between being an absent leader of the Athosians, or fully committing to the Lantean cause. This fic also doesn't ignore the impact that John has on Elizabeth and Teyla. I get the sense that they both love him, but right now they're carrying on without him. The fact that they're able to is nice, because I don't think either is the type to be unable to go without someone, despite the fact that the emptiness from his absence is tangible in the story.

Very nice characterization, and showing the relationship between the characters. (All of the characters in the story, rather. Lorne and Caldwell make a significant appearance.) I am a total sucker for stories that acknowledge all the emotional bonds forged between the characters, and this author managed to hit that exactly.
