Why This Must Be Read: And now, on to something darker. :D
This is a shorter piece than Joy's usual fare, but what hit me about it was the walk into the darker sides of the mind. This is an author that's always depicted Daniel as very self-aware, and she uses that to great effect here. The real horror for me in this piece was how Daniel could recognize how he was being conditioned to become like his abusers…and that there was a part of him that could embrace that potential. We see a darker side to Jack here, too, and it's just as disturbing. And yet, there's still light at the end, and still hope. The guys are still themselves, as well - the darkness is just as believeable as the other clearly drawn aspects of their characters. A really well-executed character piece, for all its harshness.
