Why This Must Be Read: God, I love this. Being the slash fan that I am, it was only recently that I started to read any of PhoenixE's friendship fic, and boy, was I happily surprised! In many ways, she nails these characters far more accurately in her friendship fic than in the slash, and it shines through particularly in this piece. What also gets me here is that most post-Secrets fic deals with Daniel's trauma, but this one gets down and dirty with Jack's demons. His world got rocked in this episode as well, but because of who and what he is, we tend to sweep that under the rug. Phoenix takes a good hard look at that, and Jack's struggle to make sense of his role in the "damned distasteful things" his government has used him to do. It's a great character piece that shows how sometimes just being there for your friends and being who you are can help you both get through the day.

Why this must be read : The whole premise of this fic is something every woman who has a boyfriend faces eventually….it's love when he goes out to purchase 'feminine supplies' for you, or, in this case, friendship. Yes, the idea is a bit silly…but the image of a colonel, archaeologist and killer Jaffa debating the merits of maxi vs mini and why Depends won't work is worth the price of admission in and of itself.

Why this must be read:
The good old fashioned 'have a close call, realize life isn't worth it, declare undying love' can be done to death. However, it's not always done good. In this fic, yes there is a mission gone bad that results in the patented Sam and Jack being together conclusion. However, this author didn't go over board with the angst or drama. She set things up in a believable way.

Why this must be read:
This is a side of Sam that we've never seen, and probably never will again. It starts with the premise that Jack, thinking she was dead, left her behind on Chulak in Children of the Gods. Abandoned and alone, she survived. There's no 'whiney/piney' Carter here. She was beaten, raped, tortured and found a way to survive and even garner the respect of the Jaffa on Chulak, eventually fulfilling Teal'c's role as Sholva.
A year or so later, she is 'rescued' and returned to the SGC, only to discover that, in surviving, she's seen as a traitor to her own people as well. She's caught between two worlds, welcome in neither yet also with nowhere else to go.
It's certainly not a warm and fuzzy read. It's cold blooded and brutal in places, however it is also an exploration of the character of Sam Carter that is unlike any other I've read.
It sets Sam up in a bonafide alternate universe and only time will tell if this universe is ever fully explored.

Why this must be read
This fic is set post Gemini and deals with Sam dealing with what happened and what she did. It delves a bit into her guilt and uncertainty and issues she has after she made a mistake. Again, it's another fic that's not too over the top in the angst or drama.
