Summary by the author:
On their first mission with Teyla back from maternity leave, the team gets separated, trapped, and manipulated in a deadly game of chance.
Why This Must Be Read:
While I like the way the story is divided in two separate lines of action that finally meet to reveal the full picture of what's going on here, it is the team-aspect that is the real strong suit of this story. It's the only one I found so far that addresses the matter of Teyla's first mission after her maternity leave (though I would love to find a few more).
Usually I'm not a big fan of alternating POVs but here it's the perfect way to show how the team members' minds work and how they view each other. Trillingstar has such a knack for showing this in a perfectly worded way. It just sounds - natural and true to the characters. Ronon's worry about Rodney, Rodney's thought of „Ronon-shaped protector“, the list of possible „Teyla's back“-missions John gave to Woolsey, Teyla's initial troubles to get back into the right mindset, and so much more. Yes, theforce team aspect ist strong with this one.
"Teyla shoots John a look over her shoulder. "I don't understand, Fremil. Which words?"
"The inscription on the gate," Fremil says. Something must change in John's expression, because she shifts her attention up to him, and when he meets her gaze, he knows that Fremil's added up her observations about his team and taken John's sum, and the clear understanding in her eyes causes him to swallow hard. He sees why Teyla trusts that the Raheene have not kidnapped Rodney, that they're not torturing Ronon."
