Why This Must Be Read: This couple have been friends; been in love, want, need, desire, for FIVE years - without doing anything about it and now they've given themselves this chance. They're both cautious of losing it and of being hurt, of echoing previous relationship mistakes - especially on John's side.
I don't ship John/Teyla, but even I recognise that they were the flagship couple of the show for it's duration. As such, IMO, their eventual union should've been handled with much more consideration to those characters, than is done in the books.
This fic, as the author says, fills in how they see it playing out. It was written prior to book three's release, but is done with thought and love and beautiful language, to give the reader a vision of two lovers long denied the pleasure of each other. A fic that melted this hardened slash-reader's heart.
Excerpt:
Her top felt rather short and restrictive, but it would be comfortable enough to sleep in. She trod on bare feet back to the side of John's bed. She paused before she lifted the closest edge of the duvet. He was in a deep relaxed sleep. Should she really impose her presence on him, when he had not invited her thus? Yet, she needed this. She needed…
She lifted the edge of the duvet, and he didn't stir as she carefully settled onto the small space beside him in the narrow bed. Already his body warmth had permeated the covers, and as she settled in closer it surrounded her, calling her to follow her instincts further, and so she rested her cheek down onto the cooler edge of his pillow. His face along the pillow remained relaxed in sleep, his breathing calm and steady. Flashbacks of memories played through her mind's eye - of him above her, his cheek against hers, his lips against hers…
She reached out through the tiny distance between their bodies and touched her cooled fingertips to the heat of his chest, and it was all that she needed. Curling in towards him, carefully as close as possible without disturbing him, she settled. She flattened her hand on his chest once again, allowing herself that single full contact, but he did not stir.

Date: 2013-09-02 10:46 pm (UTC)Like I said in my review, I love reading/writing slash ff, but loved the slow build of John/Teyla's relationship throughout the show itself. I was more p'd off than can be politely said here, about how their consummation was treated. It's tricky but still totally possible, to give the reader heat without the detail of higher rated works. Your fic is exactly how it should've been written in the books and could've just been slotted seamlessly into the manuscript.
Yes, I am a hardened slash reader/writer, but I have been known to read and even love really good gen, het and h/c fics - even if they're not a pairing I follow - yours is one such fic, and it needed to be shared with the world. :D

Date: 2013-09-06 10:30 pm (UTC)I really enjoyed that John/Teyla stared in the Legacy books, because they were clearly heading towards official shipdom on the series, only for the writers to unceremoniously drop the storyline in season 5. Don't get me started on that, but I do feel that the writers of the series gave up on many of their characters in season 5. I think they had moved their attention onto their new baby SGU and didn't really care enough anymore. So its left to us fans to care, and its so great that so many people are still writing and reading fanfic of all kinds, or making art and videos to celebrate Stargate :) But that's just my opinion :)
Thanks again, and long live Stargate online.
