Why This Must Be Read: The story is an entertaining combo of thrill, dark/scary and fun plus the surprise revelation about the nature of the thing Rodney explores and discovers.
Despite the humor on the surface, showing in the team's words and individual behavior, the dangerousness of those people beneath this layer is palpable/visible, not only by their actual actions but also very much by their thoughts and the entire way they think, assess a situation etc. They are no "über"-heroes, they are perfectly human - but they have that extra special edge that makes them dangerous if poked too much. They are *used* to having to defend themselves by any means necessary up to and including killing the opponent but they're also ... well, "normal" people.
Tthe characters' ways of thinking/reacting and their "voices" are spot on in this story. I liked especially that Teyla is not too serene, no "Saint Teyla" here, but the strong woman and warrior that she is while Rodney is a great mix of internal complaining, train-of-thoughts, nervous babbling but being stubbornly brave all the while *while* complaining to god and the world.
"Why am I apologizing for not needing a rescue?" Sheppard said plaintively. "I didn’t mean to get rescued, it was all Ronon’s fault."
Rodney didn’t stop glaring.
