Why this must be read: Stargate Atlantis and Holmes on Homes from HGTV? This fusion could have been pure crack. Instead, all the familiar characters from SGA just fit right into place in this down-to-earth story of Rodney McKay, perfectionist contractor, and his team of expert renovators, and John Sheppard, the "weirdly charming" host of his show. Team Sheppard and Co. are as far from the madness of the Pegasus Galaxy as possible and yet their unique brand of family remains intact.
apple_pi skillfully paints the slow, solid build of John and Rodney's relationship on the backdrop of busy lives, everyday struggles, and growing fame – with a few twists and turns that echo life on Atlantis at its best and worst.
It's not all unicorns and glitter pens and blowjobs, Rodney thinks later, but it's solid and strong at the core. It's like one of his jobs - it takes hard work and planning, guessing about all the things that might go wrong. He's not good at knowing about people the way he is about walls and floors and roofs and windows, and that frustrates him. John's even worse, or maybe he's better, but it doesn't matter because he's monumentally incapable of talking about it. Talk of feelings sends him looking for the loudest power tool to stand beside, so he can cup one hand over his ear and shout "What?!" while grinning at Rodney.
