Why this must be read:  What if The Ark of Truth turned out differently and Daniel didn't come through it back to himself, but, instead, damaged and vulnerable?  This story presents just such a scenario, in a perfectly paced, subtle character study that shows to the reader, and to Daniel, the love and loyalty he engenders in people (and in dogs) and, most especially, in Jack.
