Why This Must Be Read:
This is a cute little piece of 'Rodney as tiny dragon' crack. John makes a surprisingly excellent interpreter for him. :-D
Excerpt:
John and Teyla turn as one and hurry down to the gate room where Elizabeth is talking quietly to Miko who looks pale and worried, clutching her pack in her arms as though it's a lifeline.
"Elizabeth?" John asks, relieved to see that everyone else looks fine, although a few of the newer marines have shell-shocked expressions on their faces, which is just never a good thing. "Where's McKay?"
Elizabeth sighs and looks up, shaking her head. "Not here, John."
"Elizabeth?"
Elizabeth just shakes her head and makes a little gesture for Lorne to walk Miko to the meeting room, which he does without a word. The others file past while John stares at Elizabeth, stomach knotting uncomfortably. "Not here, John." She repeats, mouth set. "This isn't something I want broadcast throughout the city before we've had time to decide what we're going to do."
Teyla comes up on his other side and the two of them get him moving up the stairs to the meeting room.
"He's okay, right?" John has to ask because he's learned it's always a bad thing to just assume things in Pegasus.
"Rodney's...fine." Elizabeth doesn't quite meet his eyes.
Teyla places a hand on his arm, gentle pressure. "Dr. Weir would not lie about this." She murmurs, and even though he hears the concern in her voice he also hears the truth, the faith in her words and nods.
"Really, John." Elizabeth says quietly, still avoiding his eyes. "He's fine."
John can tell there is something else that she isn't telling them, but he's willing to grant her the benefit of the doubt for the moment. "And by 'fine' you mean...?"
Elizabeth smiles and shakes her head, taking hold of his arm while Teyla tightens her hold on the other. "It would be easier just to show you." She says, leading them to the meeting room where he can see the others already seated.
Once they step inside Elizabeth breaks off from them to claim her place at the head of the table while Teyla pushes him down into the chair beside her and taking the chair next to him.
"Well?" John asks, looking at the faces around the table. "How did the mission go?"
Elizabeth's smile is strained, but she gives them the good news about establishing healthy ties with a friendly trade partner, and John relaxes because it's generally considered a deal-breaker when a trade partner makes any kind of hostile move against an ally.
Usually.
"What happened to McKay?" John asks, no longer able to wait, and suddenly no one is able to look at him or Teyla, and John's getting an unpleasant feeling in the pit of his stomach again.
"It was meant as an honor." Miko says softly, setting her pack on the conference table. "They did not intend any harm."
John's eyes narrow because he's heard variations of that phrase one time too many since setting foot in Pegasus. Not once has it ever meant anything good for him or anyone else on Atlantis.
Then the top of her pack shifts, and a tiny little head pops out, peering at all of them warily before a small blue lizard climbs out and sits on top of the pack, tail flicking back and forth nervously.
"What is that?" John asks, and the lizard turns to look at him, head cocked to the side.
"It was meant as an honor." Miko says again, staring at the table and sounding far more miserable than John has ever heard her. "Knowledge is a sacred thing in their culture."
John shares an uneasy look with Teyla and takes a closer look at the...lizard thing. Small and snakelike with blue scales shading almost towards green under the lighting, tiny little horns with a slight twist to them and -
"Is that -"
"John - "
The lizard shakes its head, whiskers twitching as it sniffs the air experimentally, and John sighs in resignation. "Please don't tell me that's McKay."
