Why This Must Be Read:

I really enjoyed the detail in this AU from this year's McShep Match. John is a firefighter and Rodney an expert called in for a raging forest fire. There are certainly plenty of sparks generated between them in the days and nights of fast and furious action.

Excerpt:

Rodney scanned the room, taking in all the different groups and activities. The bay was significantly cooler than the hallway they'd just exited, and Rodney searched for the source of that relief. In the four corners of the room, two industrial-sized fans were blowing at full speed, their roaring a dull drone over the chaos in the center of the hangar.

Focusing on the hectic activity, he identified three distinct command centers. Each had a map littered with push pins and red markings. The largest, central map showed all of the areas now affected by the fire, while the other two had different areas marked off on the map, and different colored pins that Rodney assumed were different jump teams. Around each center, several men and women in dirty firefighting gear monitored walkie-talkies, keeping in touch with the crews in the midst of the fires.

He narrowed his eyes at Teyla, impressed by the organization of her set-up. "You're working the situation in three separate command centers?"

"Yes," she replied with confidence. "Initially, I only had one area set up from which to monitor the situation, but when the additional fires broke out and continued to escalate, and more men were spread out over larger territories, I thought having a different command center for each area of escalation would be more efficient." She paused for a moment, taking a deep breath. "It is much easier to keep track of where my crews are and where they need to be. Before the extra centers, it was... well, Dr. McKay , it was dangerous."

"It's what I'd have done," Rodney said, matter-of-fact. He surveyed the rest of the room, seeing places in the hangar that remained empty. "You're anticipating the need for more command centers?"

"Yes," Teyla replied. "Several of my men have come back from the fires saying that it will get worse before it gets any better. From what John has told me, I think we'll have at least three more fires break out. And with the drought the way it is, and the ominously dry forecast, I don't see a way to prevent it from happening."

Rodney nodded. "I've been keeping an eye on the forecasts as well. I hate it when nature works against us," he said, shaking his head. . "Well, let's get me set up, then you can fill me in on the current situation." He took his laptop bag from her, and claimed an empty corner that had a view of the entire hangar.
