Why This Must Be Read: This is one of the best Daniel's-about-to-leave-for-Atlantis-and-Jack's-not-dealing-as-well-as-he-pretends-to-be(-and-for-that-matter-neither-is-Daniel) fics out there. The eloquent snarkasm of the Jack headspace, the heartbroken desperation under a crumbling veneer of nonchalance, the impossible situation that won't get any less impossible or yield any more bearable a solution no matter how many times they hash it over -- it's all beautifully painful and true to the characters. Set right before the beginning of Season 9, the fic also serves an arcing lob that the first episode of the season is going to smash across the court, and the last line is a thing of beauty, suspended in the air over the net.
