Why This Must Be Read: I really just can't heap enough praise on this fic. For fans of the pairing, it's a refreshingly down-to-earth and heart-meltingly beautiful Jack/Daniel romance. For fans of the characters, it develops wonderful backstories for Jack and Daniel, surrounds them with engaging, three-dimensional friends and family, and gives them realistic alternative careers and lives that put the 'Moebius' and Continuum caricatures to shame. For fans of the show, it's a gripping, series-spanning extrapolation. And for fans of good writing and interesting narrative, it's a fascinating and amazingly successful exercise in objective viewpoint. Add a Chicago setting presented in affectionate detail, some squee-worthy cameos, and a couple of way-cool twists that I can't divulge without spoilage, and you have one of the standouts from last year's J/D Ficathon and a real tour de force.

Excerpt:
Daniel squints through the doors of the Park Place Hotel at the pouring rain and pulls the hood of his jacket up. He ducks out into the downpour, clumsily clutching his two battered bags.
His attention is briefly caught by red and blue lights down the street, glowing in the gray mist. Emergency vehicles surround a black sedan that appears to have lost an argument with a delivery truck.
His face reflects a moment of compassion before he turns and trudges the other way, hunched awkwardly over his belongings in a futile attempt to keep them dry.
