Why This Must Be Read:
Written before "The Shrine" first aired and set in the earlier seasons, this story has a Rodney who's lost his mind/memory/intelligence somehow. It follows the interactions with a number of people in Atlantis, but most of all it's about Rodney with John and what John has lost (and possibly gained in the end).
Excerpt:
Rodney is more philosophical and understanding now than he has ever been. He knows how to read people, now. He doesn’t understand the underlying emotion, doesn’t understand the anger and hatred and fear, but he recognises the negativity.
And it’s when he’s with the team, leaning back against Ronon’s shoulder, staring up at the dark sky with a happy smile that he says, “You look like how the stars feel,”
And John shudders, looks up into endless space, a galaxy that Rodney donated his life too, and nods, tangling his fingers with Rodney like matching pieces of a puzzle. Teyla smiles and runs her hand through Rodney’s hair, and Ronon pulls him further up, and they sit in silence.
And then, because after years of constant babbling, John resents the silence, he breaks it easily, fragile pieces of quiet replaced with near-contentment. He questions Ronon and Teyla, asks them of long ago legends, of stories aligned with stars in the sky.
And Rodney listens, wonder and awe painted in wide, reflective eyes, curled into a warm pile with his team, surrounded by empty, empty space and love, love, love.
