Show: Stargate SG-1
Rec Category: Character: Jack O'Neill
Characters: Jack and Daniel and the "Brood"
Pairing: Jack and Daniel
Het/Slash/Gen: Slash
Warning: Established relationship
Author on LJ: Don't think the author has one
Author's Website: www.area52hkh.net/author.php
Link: www.area52hkh.net/aso/orrymain4/outonstr.php
Why this must be read: The story is technically part of a long string of stories that the author has written. The story is AU. Jack and Daniel are in an established relationship and have 11 kids plus a baby and 2 dogs. Needless to say, things get interesting in the household fast. This story shows a side of Jack that is interesting and believable.

Date: 2011-02-24 12:59 am (UTC)This Jack and Daniel bear no resemblance whatsoever to the characters on the show. It's a self-indulgent, sugary epic (not throwing stones, I've done one of those myself, minus the sugar) but it deviates from canon characterization so much that it would be more accurate to label it 'original fic' rather than 'fanfic'.
'AU' just doesn't cover it. This isn't Jack and Daniel.

Date: 2011-02-24 02:05 am (UTC)Sorry. Chalk it up to the strength of my reaction to the stories of this particulalar author. I need to remember that mileage varies.

Date: 2011-02-24 11:00 am (UTC)This one? Well, let's just say that nothing will ever persuade me to read this author again. I decided that years ago. OOC doesn't begin to cover it.
Reccing is such a personal thing; one's reader's "great" is another's "eugh, you want me to read THIS???" And I'm usually willing to take the risk. *g* If you enjoyed it and want to share, share away. That's one of the many great things fandom is all about. But mention of this author will invoke strong reactions, and usually not positive.

I'm glad to hear to it that you've enjoyed my other recs. I've been trying to d a variety of stories and/or authors. You know, spread the wealth around :g:

Date: 2011-02-24 04:07 pm (UTC)This author was recc'd here a few years back for another J/D fic and the negative reaction was the same, as I recall.
It's funny, really; if you described the intensely negative reaction her fics get to someone without describing the fics themselves, people would probably assume they were full of depraved acts and tons of gore and violence or something when it's the exact opposite :-)
I have issues with the fics (and I've read maybe six or seven over the years so I have tried them) because I truly, honestly, don't see a single connection to the canon characters when it comes to their personality. It feels like she's invented two characters that she likes, men with a huge extended family, who adore each other and use petnames like 'Angel' and 'my Love', and own the same dogs as the author, and speak telepathically (not sure how that is explained, but they can), and called them 'Jack' and 'Daniel'.
There are a thousand versions of Jack and Daniel in fic; we all interpret them our own way, but even in an AU, even in an extreme characterisation, there has to be SOMETHING that rings true, and nothing does in her fics for me.

Date: 2011-02-25 01:06 am (UTC)One of the biggest problems with Orrymain (one of many) is how she turns Daniel into an adult infant right from the start, which makes a lot of people hit the back button. Don't get me wrong, she's a prolific writer, and pretty much has a fic an episode, but her characterizations are just wackadoodle. There's no swearing-Daniel is always rolling his eyes and saying "Gawd"-and other things that just make the toes curl: Daniel calling Jack his silver fox, the telepathic beagles (that one sends some folks screaming off into the hills) the way Jack and Daniel can speak telepathically...the list goes on.
Don't get me wrong, I'm one of the first ones to tell canon to take a flying jump off of a rolling semi, but keep the characters visible. Can you really, honestly see Jack calling Daniel "Angel?"
Anyway, this is just a kind word from someone who almost made the same mistake. I was going to rec one of her stories and just happened to ask someone on my flist via PM what they thought and boy, am I glad I did that.
So its all good! Keep on reccing! Orrymain's work just hits a spot in the fandom, but we all learn by doing. janedavitt and jdjunkie and madaboutdanny...they've been around for a while, so they know what they are talking about. I learned from them!

Date: 2011-02-25 11:24 am (UTC)Having met the lady I can see where her fics come from. She has a... singular vision. Still, different strokes, yadda.
Keep the recs comin', for good or bad!
