Why this must be read: This was posted maybe four days ago, but it's such a phenomenal fic that I had to rec it. The author gets inside of Sam's head as she watches her planet - her home - explode in front of her eyes. There are Sam/Jack bits (mostly in hugs and comforting, nothing that should turn off anyone who doesn't ship them), but to me this is an overwhelming Sam fic that punches you in the gut in the most beautiful way possible.
She clenched her jaw, keeping herself from questioning the call. Lieutenant Reed was sure, she knew that; they'd done the math, made the plans, and there was no time to second guess them now. She kept her voice steady as she replied, “Acknowledged, Lieutenant.” Nodding to her first officer, who had the helm, she said, “Time to go. Take us just past the initial blast radius.”
There was a stir around her. “Not to the Alpha Site?”
Another voice. “We're – we're going to watch.” It wasn't quite a question.
Sam's gaze was bleak as she turned to the young officer who had voiced it. “Someone should.”
