penknife all the time, and everyone should go read this fic. This one is just an amazing story about Jack after he returns from being a POW. It's got wonderful Jack characterization, a great Sara who only wants to help but can't quite figure out how--mostly because Jack doesn't quite know what he needs, and an outstanding Charlie Kawalsky who just gets Jack in a way that only other military people can.
It's been six months since he's seen Charlie. Two and a half to three, and it seems like it should have taken years for him to turn from the toddler he remembers into this little kid who runs across the room and barrels into Jack's legs so hard that he nearly goes down under the assault. "Gently!" Sara says, and smiles at Jack. "You're going to hear that a lot."
They spend most of the next week holed up at home not dealing with other people, but there's no way to avoid having her father come over. Jack tries to make conversation, but it doesn't work very well. They're friendly but not close at the best of times, and right now he can't think of a thing to say to him. He thinks it's possible that her father expects him to tell him the story of what happened, like a proper returning hero.
Over his dead body.
